March 21, 2007

I have heard from many that they are awaiting details on Claire's status. I am hoping Shannon will have time this weekend to give a detailed report. I can share with you all that Claire is feeling great, enjoying the health that comes when given a break from the high doses of therapy she has undergone.

Thanks is never enough.

Keep on thinking, praying, and believing in Claire.

Claire,

Thank you very much for the wonderful pictures you made for me. I have them taped up on my desk, and look at them everyday. Thank you mom for all the books that were donated to the clinic. You are always in my thoughts.

Hi Miller Family,

I continue to pray for Claire and for your family. And I am thrilled to hear that Claire is feeling so good!

I don't want to add any confusion as I know Claire's diagnosis is different from Lillian's. However, I read your comments about radiation and wanted to share what we have learned recently. Here is Lillian's history in case you want to compare:
*Lillian was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma a week prior to her 2nd birthday. She is considered high risk due to her age.
*Her resection was successful though the surgeon believes he left a layer of cells which have not appeared on any subsequent MRI's.
*Lillian has completed six rounds of chemo: three using vincristine, cisplatin, cyclophosfomide and etoposide and another three using thiotepa and carboplatin. The last three round were each followed by a stem cell transplant which they harvested from her prior to the start of chemo.
*This chemo protocol was designed for high risk patients in order to avoid or postpone radiation.

After talking to many doctors around the country, we are strongly considering using focal radiation. Even the author of the chemo protocol (who says the protocol has been successful) is recommending adding focal radiation to her treatment. As this is a fairly new treatment for her age group, they cannot give us definite risks/benefits. (She would be the first child under 3 years old to receive focal radiation at Doernbecher's.) However, the doctors are confident that there will not be signficant cognitive or physical side effects.

Full cranio-spinal radiation is not even being considered due to the overwhelmingly negative side effects in kids her age.

Again, I don't want to add any confusion. I know multiple opinions are not always helpful - particularly when comparing different tumors. But I wanted to share the newest information that we've been given in Lillian's situation. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at j2lharris@verizon.net.

Keep fighting and we'll keep praying!!!

Hi guys. Happy to hear Claire has had a break from chemo and got to spend quality time with you at home. Perhaps you've spent some quality time at Target too? I continue to think of all of you every single day. Claire can, and is. She's awesome.
